We opened the original Caffe Cielo on 8th Avenue between 52nd and 53rd Street in 1986. For the next 25 years that elegantly comfortable location was a staple of the neighborhood, serving our exceptional Italian cuisine to locals and tourists alike. In 2013 we moved a few blocks south to the Mayfair Hotel, in heart of the Theater District on West 49th Street. Look for us right next door to The Book Of Mormon at the Eugene O’Neill Theater. Our name may have changed, but our dedication to quality service and cuisine has remained constant. In fact, our chef and many of our cooks have been with us since the day we opened almost three decades ago.
Joe Gambuto built his dream restaurant in a spacious former liquor store on a quiet section of 8th Avenue. Then, using the knowledge gained between his mother’s kitchen and the successful businesses he’d built in New York’s garment district, he taught himself how to run a restaurant. In the days before the rejuvenation of Times Square, Caffe Cielo was one of only a handful of white tablecloth restaurants in the area. Joe’s excellent food soon attracted a regular clientele, while his classic good looks and quirky personality helped to make all his customers feel like family. After 25 years in that location, Joe’s daughter Isabella began working with him which led to her being named a partner in their next endeavor – Cielo at the Mayfair.
Isabella Gambuto grew up in the restaurant business. And by grew up, we mean she envisioned the banquettes as a playground and even chipped her tooth on the bar. Isabella graduated from Oberlin College in 2009 with a double degree in Politics and African American Studies. Following graduation, Isabella found refuge from the economic disaster by working for her father booking musical acts at the restaurant. As a natural-born foodie, she quickly fell in love with the restaurant industry and decided it was the life for her. When the opportunity arose to run a new chapter of the beloved Caffe Cielo, she ran with it and hasn’t looked back. She has since modernized her family’s Italian restaurant, embracing the concept of a more casual and affordable dining experience while still catering to the Caffe Cielo family. As the proprietor of Cielo at the Mayfair, Isabella’s priority is making each customer’s experience as enjoyable as possible. She pays close attention to every detail, from the quality of food to the level of the service provided. Isabella and Joe are still there everyday and truly enjoy maintaining this family-run business. Our employees, regulars, and new customers call Cielo their home away from home and we welcome you to join the family!
